75Hz E-Paper Display: Solutions for Focus and Reduced Eye Strain
The E-Paper Screen Revolution from Modos Technology
Modos Technology is revolutionizing the world of e-paper screens by launching a new set of development tools, featuring ultra-fast screens with a refresh rate of up to 75 Hz, currently undergoing a crowdfunding campaign. While this rate may not be exceptional in the consumer display market, these production-grade devices offer a unique level of performance designed to meet the demands of high-focus work and a distraction-free environment.
Open Design and Overcoming Bottlenecks
Modos attributes this performance advancement to its open hardware design, centered around the Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA chip. This controller, along with DDR3 temporary memory and the STM32H750 microcontroller, successfully overcomes common bottlenecks in commercial e-paper screens. The company states that traditional systems are constrained by outdated design decisions that limit response speed and ease of use, whereas their open design removes these barriers, delivering near-instant responsiveness to a technology known for its slowness.
Philosophy of Focus and Digital Minimalism

Alexander Soto, CEO of Modos Technology, stated: "From writers and engineers to accessibility advocates and digital minimalism specialists, people are tired of distractions, eye strain, and fatigue from pervasive screens." He added: "E-paper provides a better path, and we've built tools to make it fast, flexible, and accessible to everyone." This approach represents an ideal solution for those who embrace the philosophy of Digital Minimalism, which encourages purposeful technology use to reduce stress and distractions, thereby enhancing focus and psychological well-being.
Display Flexibility and Color Options
The displays support multiple grayscale levels and a hybrid display mode, giving them high flexibility without the need for full colors. Although the device's architecture supports color screens, they are not available in the current phase, as the current application targets users who prioritize simplicity and readability over visual richness.
Compatibility and Easy Connectivity

The development kits come equipped with USB Type-C and HDMI ports, ensuring compatibility with major desktop operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux. The USB Type-C port can handle data transfer and power delivery simultaneously, but when connecting via the HDMI port, the user will need an additional power source to operate the screen.
Available Sizes and Specific Uses

These devices are available in two sizes, 6 inches and 13.3 inches, and are sold for $199 and $599 respectively. However, these devices should not be confused with commercial tablets or traditional laptops. Nevertheless, for users with specific visual or cognitive requirements, they offer an excellent alternative that reduces eye strain and digital noise.
Crowdfunding and Potential Caveats
As is always the case with crowdfunded devices, this offering comes with some caveats. Modos operates through the Crowd Supply platform, which has a proven track record of delivering projects. Nevertheless, delays, supply issues, and unexpected design revisions remain possibilities. The Modos e-paper kits are currently in the pre-order phase, with delivery expected in Q4 2025.
