Modos attributes this performance advancement to its open hardware design, centered around the Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA chip. This controller, along with DDR3 temporary memory and the STM32H750 microcontroller, successfully overcomes common bottlenecks in commercial e-paper screens. The company states that traditional systems are constrained by outdated design decisions that limit response speed and ease of use, whereas their open design removes these barriers, delivering near-instant responsiveness to a technology known for its slowness.

Although the device's architecture supports color screens, they are not available in the current phase, as the current application targets users who prioritize simplicity and readability over visual richness.

The development kits come equipped with USB Type-C and HDMI ports, ensuring compatibility with major desktop operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux. The USB Type-C port can handle data transfer and power delivery simultaneously, but when connecting via the HDMI port, the user will need an additional power source to operate the screen.

Available Sizes and Specific Uses

These devices are available in two sizes, 6 inches and 13.3 inches, and are sold for $199 and $599 respectively. However, these devices should not be confused with commercial tablets or traditional laptops.
