OpenAI announced the launch of a new, affordable subscription plan for ChatGPT in India, known as ChatGPT GO.

This plan costs 399 Indian Rupees per month (equivalent to $4.60 USD), making it significantly cheaper than the monthly Plus plan, which costs 1,999 Indian Rupees (approximately $23 USD).

Shortly before this launch, the company enabled local currency pricing for all its services.

With the introduction of the ChatGPT GO plan, OpenAI will offer Indian users the option to pay via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a leading Indian instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016.

UPI is considered one of India's most transformative financial technology innovations, having facilitated instant inter-bank, person-to-person, and person-to-merchant transactions, making India a global leader in instant payments.

New Features and Enhancements in ChatGPT GO

Nick Turley, Vice President of OpenAI and Head of ChatGPT, confirmed that the new ChatGPT GO plan will offer significant improvements, increasing message limits, image generation, and file uploads by up to 10 times compared to the free version of ChatGPT.

Turley also explained that this plan will provide an enhanced "memory retention" feature, ensuring more personalized responses for users.

Through this initiative, OpenAI aims to expand the accessibility of ChatGPT, choosing India as the first market to launch this economic plan, with plans to leverage feedback before global expansion.

Growth of ChatGPT Usage and Image Updates

It is worth noting that Tibor Blaho, a software engineer known for his accurate leaks about upcoming Artificial Intelligence products, had previously hinted at the details of this plan.

In a related context, Turley stated last month that ChatGPT currently serves over 700 million users weekly worldwide, a significant increase from 500 million users last March.

OpenAI also launched an update to the image generation feature in ChatGPT in March, and India has since seen an increase in the use of this feature.

Financial Performance of the ChatGPT App in India

According to data from app analytics company AppFigures, India is the leading country in the number of ChatGPT app downloads across various platforms, with downloads exceeding 29 million in the last ninety days.

However, the revenue generated by the application from users in India during this period did not exceed $3.6 million USD.

Competition and Future Outlook

This step is expected to contribute to an increase in ChatGPT subscribers, given the new competitive pricing.

In the context of competition, other artificial intelligence companies have made similar efforts to attract internet users in India, who number over 850 million.

For example, Perplexity last month partnered with network service provider Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions, while Google offered a free AI Pro plan for students in India for one year.

Although OpenAI's initiative does not include offering free perks, the appropriate and affordable local pricing is likely to contribute to a higher subscription conversion rate for ChatGPT in the Indian market.
