Art TVs, which gained prominence thanks to Samsung's The Frame series, have seen a remarkable rise in popularity, offering an elegant solution for displaying artwork instead of traditional black screens. The list of available options in the art screen market is expanding, including offerings from companies like Hisense and TCL, in addition to the Ambient Mode feature available on Amazon Fire TVs. Previously, there was some reservation towards this technology, particularly due to concerns related to power consumption rates and the limitations of widescreen aspect ratios, which do not always align with the nature of artworks.

However, TCL fundamentally changed this perspective with its impressive introduction of a new art screen concept during IFA 2025. This innovative 85-inch screen boasts a near-square aspect ratio (8:9) and relies on Oxide LCD technology, known for its superior ability to reduce power consumption. This advanced technology provides high efficiency in light transmittance through pixels and operates at extremely low refresh rates, down to 10 Hz. This outstanding performance qualifies it for a Class A certification in energy efficiency, which significantly outperforms most current TVs that often fall into the less efficient E or F categories.

Features of the Innovative Art Screen

The art screen also features a paper-like, anti-reflective finish, a standard feature in art displays, which enhances display quality and visual appeal. The near-square aspect ratio allows for ideal display of artwork, whether vertical or horizontal, while preserving its original size and details. Specifications indicate that the panel resolution reaches 4320x3840 pixels, equivalent to two 4K screens stacked vertically, to deliver exceptional details.

Future Outlook and Hopes

Although the 85-inch screen size may not be suitable for most homes, and with no immediate indications of TCL launching this product commercially soon due to the currently high manufacturing costs of Oxide displays, this innovative concept remains highly attractive. The screen garnered significant praise for its rich colors, convincing brightness and illumination levels, and relatively low power consumption, which represents a promising beacon for future display technologies.
