Turtle Beach Racer: The Ideal Wireless Racing Wheel for Beginners

I tested the brand-new Turtle Beach Racer wireless racing wheel at Gamescom 2025, and I believe it shines as an excellent and user-friendly option for beginners in the world of racing games. The Turtle Beach Racer is primarily designed to be compatible with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, as well as PC and Android devices. It falls into the low-to-mid price range, yet it offers a set of impressive features that make it stand out. Wireless racing wheels have always been relatively rare in the market, but the Turtle Beach Racer offers this convenient option. While more professional simulation gamers might prefer a traditional wired connection, the Turtle Beach Racer isn't targeting that segment. Instead, it's designed for a smoother experience, better suited for racing games that blend light simulation with an arcade style, such as Dirt 5, Forza Horizon 5, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, and even Rocket Racing mode in Fortnite. This wheel provides a very comfortable and engaging feel, which I personally appreciate as a player who doesn't have enough space at home to set up a full racing wheel rig. Upon its official launch, I expect it to become one of the best racing wheels for Xbox, especially if its wireless connections prove to be high-quality and stable in the long run.

Design and Build Quality of the Turtle Beach Racer

The first thing that catches the eye with the Turtle Beach Racer is its excellent build quality. Although it's primarily made of plastic and doesn't exude luxury, it far exceeds what's expected in its price category of $179.99 USD / £139.99 GBP. The wheel itself features a great design, with a soft texture that provides a light and comfortable grip for the hands. I was particularly impressed by the inclusion of additional remappable buttons on the integrated dashboard of the wheel, allowing for flexible customization of functions such as shifting gears and more. But is shifting gears the only role for these buttons? In fact, no. In a move that might not appeal to seasoned simulation drivers – but could enhance the Racer's appeal for beginners – this wheel does not come with a separate pedal set. Instead, the accelerator and brake pedals are assigned by default to the rear paddles. This decision likely aims to keep the Racer's price competitive, and it also reduces the number of plastic parts that could become waste in the future.

Compact Design and Adjustable Lap Rest

This wheel is exceptionally compact, which is further enhanced by the adjustable lap rest that comes with it. This rest helps you comfortably secure the unit on your lap, making it ideal for those who don't have a dedicated gaming desk or table. I find this feature very appealing, especially as someone who often struggles to set up basic plug-and-play racing wheels without significantly altering my current setup. I believe all entry-level and mid-range racing wheels should adopt this feature in the future to improve user experience.

Excellent Wireless Performance and Long Battery Life

I was impressed by the responsiveness of the wireless connection of the wheel. During my experience with Dirt 5 using the Racer, I didn't notice any significant input delays. The wheel supports both 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth connections, although I highly recommend the former for greater stability, even in arcade-style racing games. Turtle Beach claims that the Racer can operate for up to 30 hours on a single charge, which is an excellent duration that surpasses many of the best Xbox controllers in terms of battery life. Of course, this is a feature we will verify in a full review, but if true, it would make the Racer's portability even more impressive.

Launch Date and Compatibility

The Turtle Beach Racer is set to launch on September 9, 2025. The wheel will be compatible with Xbox consoles (including Series X|S and Xbox One), Windows PCs, and Android mobile devices. There is currently no information about a PlayStation model, but if this initial product achieves sufficient success, Turtle Beach is expected to consider releasing a later or modified version for Sony's platform. The wheel features 270 degrees of rotation, making it ideal for an enjoyable and realistic driving experience in racing games aimed at both new and intermediate players.
