Ball x Pit: A Unique Blend of Breakout, Vampire Survivors, and City Building
Ball x Pit: A Comprehensive Review of the New Roguelike Game and its Unique Blend
Ball x Pit: is an innovative roguelike game that cleverly combines familiar elements from popular games such as Breakout and Vampire Survivors, along with city-building mechanics, to offer a unique and complex gameplay experience. Although the game may take some time to master, achieving the first victory opens the door to addictive fun and the desire for successive rounds within the pit.
What are Roguelike Games?
Procedural Generation
Levels and encounters change randomly each run, offering a unique experience every time.
Permadeath
Every failure means starting over, increasing the challenge and importance of decisions.
Replayability
No two runs are ever alike, ensuring continuous challenge and endless fun.
Roguelike games: are a subgenre of role-playing games (RPGs) characterized by core features such as procedurally generated levels and permadeath, meaning every failure requires starting over. These games often involve dungeon crawling, with an emphasis on turn-based combat and grid-based movement. These elements aim to increase replayability, as no two runs are exactly alike, providing a continuous challenge and new experiences every time. Source, Source, Source.
Core Gameplay and Exploration
Ball x Pit: does not focus on a traditional story, but instead offers a mysterious and intriguing setting. The game begins with a scene of the multi-level city of "Balbylon" being struck by a catastrophic glowing giant ball, leaving behind a massive pit that "treasure hunter" characters seek to explore. Your journey begins as "The Warrior," a knight-like character, in a designated play area, where you continuously launch balls at relentless waves of enemies. Your character features automatic firing and unlimited ammunition, allowing you to fully focus on directing the balls to achieve maximum effective rebounds and collect various gems and rewards left by defeated enemies.

Upgrade and Development System
Level Up
Collect gems to increase stats.
Special Upgrades
Poison balls, destructive lasers, or unique abilities.
Merge and Evolve
Combine balls to create entirely new special ones.
Similar to Vampire Survivors: collecting enough gems levels up your character, improving their stats and granting you the option to choose a powerful upgrade. These upgrades include special balls that can poison enemies or activate destructive lasers. Sometimes, defeated enemies leave small rainbow vortices that allow you to level up several upgrades at once, merge balls to combine their powers, or even evolve two balls to form an entirely new special ball. By choosing the optimal set of upgrades, you can become an unstoppable force, with balls and effects filling the screen as you decimate hordes of enemies and even mighty bosses. At the end of each run, whether victorious or defeated, your character gains persistent experience points, making them stronger and more prepared for future runs.
Base Building and Management in New Balbylon
Base Building and Management: After completing combat rounds, you have the opportunity to visit "New Balbylon" to engage in the second part of Ball x Pit: base building and management. In this stage, you can create wheat fields and forests to gather essential resources, or construct buildings that unlock new characters and provide permanent stat boosts. To collect resources or erect buildings, you must direct your characters to bounce against fields and structures, just as you would in the main gameplay mode. You can also upgrade existing structures for better advantages, and with progression, you will be able to build facilities that automatically collect resources, making base management easier.
Effective Strategy: Initially, I wasn't enthusiastic about the idea of base building, preferring to focus on the exciting main runs. However, over time, after developing an effective strategy for resource gathering and understanding the mechanics of upgrading buildings, I found myself spending more time than expected developing and improving my base. This effort was not in vain, as it yielded significant benefits, making subsequent combat rounds easier and more enjoyable.

Character Diversity and its Impact on Gameplay
Bounce Damage
5% increased damage per bounce, encouraging strategic play.
Turn-Based Mode
Transforms the game into a turn-based style for a different experience.
Auto-Upgrade
Automatically chooses upgrades, perfect for those who prefer to focus on gameplay.
Solo Play
An advanced character capable of completing difficult runs alone.
Buildings in Ball x Pit are key: to unlocking new characters, and each character adds a unique dimension to the gameplay style, ensuring a fresh and exciting experience. For example, one character benefits from a 5% increase in damage per bounce, pushing players to explore tight corners for intense rebounds and accumulating massive damage. Another character transforms the game into a turn-based style, while a different character automatically chooses their upgrades. Among the characters available in the later stages, there is a character capable of playing the game completely by themselves, which proved very useful when attempting to clear difficult levels and advanced upgrades at the end of the game.
Conclusion and Final Experience
Addictive Fun
An exciting and engaging start, with a desire to explore the game.
Routine Fatigue
A feeling of exhaustion with repeated wins and successive runs.
Enjoyable Chaos
Rediscovering fun in a colorful and positively chaotic experience.
Towards the end of my experience: with Ball x Pit, I admit I started to feel a type of fatigue, similar to what I sometimes experience playing Vampire Survivors for long periods. When winning became routine, my focus shifted towards maximizing achievements in a way that felt more like an obsession than genuine enjoyment. I even find it embarrassing to confess that I let the auto-play character handle several runs in the final level while I engaged in other activities.
Enjoyable Experience: However, at the peak of concentration during a successful run, Ball x Pit transforms into an enjoyable, colorful, and positively chaotic experience, much like an intensified and evolved version of the classic Breakout game. With multiple playable characters and diverse options to improve your base, Ball x Pit offers strategic depth worth exploring.
Ball x Pit is currently available: on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S. It is also scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 28th.
