Google's Investment in India: Google plans to invest a massive $15 billion to establish a giant data and AI center in India. This center will be located in Visakhapatnam, in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, with the investment planned over the next five years, extending to 2030. This is Google's largest project in India, following its initial commitment of $10 billion to the country in 2020. The center will have an operational capacity of 1 gigawatt, a massive capacity equivalent to powering about 700,000 to 800,000 homes, or a city with approximately 1.8 million people. CEO Statements: Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, stated that the new AI center will be the company's largest investment outside the United States, indicating plans to expand its capacity to "multiple gigawatts" over time. Kurian added during the launch ceremony of the AI center in New Delhi: "It is an integral part of a global network of AI centers across 12 different countries. Submarine Cables and Partnerships: Google also announced plans to bring its submarine cable infrastructure to Visakhapatnam. The American tech giant has entered a strategic partnership with Indian telecom provider Bharti Airtel to develop both the data center and the cable landing station in the city. Furthermore, Google has collaborated with AdaniConneX, backed by the Adani Group, to establish the data center infrastructure.

Digital Backbone: Kurian emphasized the importance of this project, stating: "We see it not just as a landing station for a large number of cables, but also providing the digital backbone that connects different parts of India together."

Tensor Processing Units (TPUs): Google clarified that the AI center will offer "a full suite of solutions," including dedicated Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to enhance local AI processing capabilities. These units are custom processors developed by Google to accelerate machine learning operations and AI applications, specifically used for neural networks (Google Cloud, 2024).

Choosing Visakhapatnam: Google's choice of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh is not surprising. The southern state, under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has previously succeeded in attracting prominent global tech companies like Oracle and Microsoft to establish centers in Hyderabad, which was the capital of Andhra Pradesh before Telangana was formed. Naidu, a key political ally who supported Prime Minister Modi's return to power in the recent general elections, has played a pivotal role in shaping national policy discussions ever since.

Government Support for AI Goals: Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated: "This AI center will be a crucial contribution to achieving important AI goals [in India] in multiple ways."

Proposals for Enhanced Connectivity: The minister urged Google to consider India's Andaman Islands as the next major data landing station for global internet traffic, noting that Singapore is "completely congested," assuring the company of full government support. He also suggested connecting Visakhapatnam to Sittwe in Myanmar to improve connectivity in India's northeastern states.
