Group Chat Feature: Meta is adding a group chat feature to the Threads app, allowing users to message multiple friends in shared conversations instead of individual direct messages. Threads users can create a group chat by starting a new message and adding up to 50 people who follow their Threads account. The group chat name can be customized to easily identify it by topic or participants, similar to how group messages work in Facebook Messenger.

Global Expansion and Encryption: Group chat support is currently rolling out globally, with the exception of the UK and Australia. Meta spokesperson, Alex Booker, told The Verge that the company is working to expand the messaging feature to these regions "as quickly as possible." Future updates will include improved inbox management tools and enabling Threads users to invite people to group chats by sharing a link, rather than individually adding them to the conversation. However, Booker confirmed that Threads group chats will not support end-to-end encryption, despite the platform affirming that its messages are "protected by Meta's strong privacy standards, account protection, and safety infrastructure."

Synchronization with European Expansion: The launch of the group messaging feature coincides with Threads' expansion of messaging features to the European Union "in the coming days," including support for both individual direct messages and group chats.
