Apple Boosts Apple iPhone Capabilities with Advanced Satellite Connectivity

Apple is enhancing its iPhone devices with ambitious new features leveraging satellite technology, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Currently, iPhones support text messaging, emergency calls, and roadside assistance communication via satellite.

New Features Under Development

New features under development include an API that allows app developers to support satellite communications in their own apps, as well as a version of Apple Maps that enables users to navigate without cellular or Wi-Fi connection. The company also aims to add the ability to send photos via messages using satellites, and increase support for "natural usage" which allows users to connect to the satellite even if the phone is not directly pointed at the sky.

Expanding Coverage and 5G Network Enhancements

Improvements significantly increase the usability of iPhones when their owners are outside the range of traditional cellular networks. Another potential upgrade, first reported by The Information, could improve 5G networks by allowing them to connect to satellites for increased coverage. This feature is known as 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) and aims to enable cellular towers to utilize satellite connectivity to extend coverage, making communication available even in areas without good traditional cellular service. Pricing Model and Partnership with Globalstar

Gurman stated that basic features would be free, while customers would pay carriers for more advanced support.
