X Unmasks Foreign-Run Far-Right Influencer Network from Russia and Nigeria
Revealing Foreign Influencers Supporting MAGA Rhetoric on Platform X
Uncovering Foreign Interference on X
A new "About this Account" feature has revealed on platform X (formerly Twitter) that many prominent influencers adopting the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) rhetoric and supporting the far-right are actually foreign entities based in countries like Russia, India, and Nigeria. This feature, launched on Friday, allows users to see an account's location, join date, number of username changes, and how the app was downloaded, thus enhancing transparency regarding the identity of influential accounts.
Examples and Scale of the Phenomenon
These discoveries have sparked a wave of controversy, with Democratic influencers expressing a sense of triumph after their repeated warnings about foreign interference. For example, the MAGANationX account, with nearly 400,000 followers and self-identified as a "national voice for the people," was found to be based in Eastern Europe. Similarly, the IvankaNews_ account, an Ivanka Trump fan account with a million followers that constantly posts about the dangers of Islam, the threat of illegal immigration, and support for Trump, was found to be based in Nigeria.

A leftist influencer commented on this revelation as a "disaster" for the online right, noting that half of their large accounts were foreign nationals impersonating Americans. This phenomenon is not new; the use of fake accounts to bolster support for the MAGA movement was observed by the Resilient Information Center, an independent non-profit research organization, during the 2024 elections. The center confirmed that these practices aim to influence public opinion and steer political discourse.

Motivations and Political Implications
Many users have questioned the reasons for such a large number of MAGA influencers operating from outside the United States, suggesting they might be working for foreign governments. An author and academic noted that a significant portion of the hate speech adopted by the MAGA movement is nothing but "Russian propaganda". This Russian propaganda aims to sow division and fuel political polarization in Western countries, especially the United States, by supporting populist and far-right movements.
