"Maja's" Influential Accounts Run From Abroad: Russia and Nigeria Lead the Way

Unveiling Foreign Interference in Supporting the "MAGA" Movement on X Platform

In a notable development, the social media platform "X" (formerly Twitter) has revealed its new "About This Account" feature, which showed that many key influencers supporting the "MAGA" movement operate from outside the United States as foreign entities. This transparent feature allows users on "X" to access detailed information about any account, including its geographical location, join date, number of username changes, and app download method. Following the launch, rival groups began examining their opponents' accounts, revealing that dozens of large accounts of "MAGA" and right-wing influencers are managed from foreign countries such as Russia, India, and Nigeria, instead of the United States. For example, the account "MAGANationX", which is followed by nearly 400,000 people and claims to be a "national voice for the people," was found to be managed from a region in Eastern Europe. Another example is the "IvankaNews" account, dedicated to Ivanka Trump, which has a million followers and continuously publishes content about the dangers of Islam, the threat of illegal immigration, and support for Trump, and was found to be managed from Nigeria.

Implications of the Revelation and Initial Reactions

Democratic influencers considered this revelation an affirmation of their repeated warnings about foreign interference in American internal affairs and attempts to undermine the United States. In response, Nikita Bier, X's Head of Product Development, acknowledged that the new feature had "some aspects that need improvement," explaining that the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) might affect the accuracy of geographical location for accounts. It is worth noting that the tool was briefly withdrawn after its launch in late November 2025, then reinstated after addressing some initial challenges, with the aim of enhancing transparency and combating inauthentic interaction on the platform, especially amidst increasing content generated by AI (TechCrunch, 2025).

Strategies of Artificial Support and Financial Influence

The phenomenon of using fake accounts and bots on social media platforms has long been a global strategy to create artificial support for individuals or ideologies. In this context, the Information Resilience Center, an independent non-profit research organization, pointed to the extensive use of fake accounts to promote the "MAGA" movement during the 2024 election campaigns. This latest revelation about the origin of accounts raises serious questions among users about continued foreign interference in American politics. It is also worth noting that some content creators receive financial compensation for publishing tweets aimed at increasing engagement around controversial American political issues, where U.S. dollar payments from the "X" platform can have a significant economic impact on the lives of individuals in countries such as Nigeria or Bangladesh.
