Nothing, in collaboration with the UK's leading online parenting community Mumsnet, has announced the launch of a new smartphone specifically focused on teen safety, named "Other Phone".
The "Other Phone" is categorized as "the safest phone for children currently available on the market," and is a modified and enhanced version of Nothing's popular CMF Phone 2 Pro, pre-equipped with the innovative SafetyMode Plus software package.
This advanced package instantly blocks inappropriate digital content on the screen in real-time, in addition to giving parents complete and effective control over app access remotely to ensure their children's protection.
Despite similar devices being available on the market, such as the HMD Fuse, which uses SafeToNet's HarmBlock+ AI technology to block harmful content, the "Other Phone" stands out with its competitive pricing, which is less than half the price of HMD's dedicated children's phone.
As it is based on the design and specifications of the CMF Phone 2 Pro, which is considered one of the best budget phones currently available, it is expected to be well-received by teenagers interested in fashion and modern technology.
In the UK, the "Other Phone" is available at an initial price of £279, plus a monthly subscription of £5.99 for the essential SafetyMode Plus service.
For comparison, the standard CMF Phone 2 Pro costs approximately $279 USD / £249 GBP / $509 AUD, and was described in our review as "an incredibly low price for a phone of such high quality."
Currently, its immediate availability in other geographical regions such as the USA seems unlikely, as the "Other Phone" is still in its experimental phase.
Technical Specifications of "Other Phone"
Key Technical Specifications
The currently available specifications for the "Other Phone" include a powerful 5,000 mAh battery, 8 GB of RAM, and an advanced "quad-camera system."
Since the device is described as a version of the CMF Phone 2 Pro on its official website, it is likely to have the same powerful MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Pro 5G processor chip and a high-quality 6.77-inch AMOLED display found in Nothing's budget phone.
SafetyMode Plus Flexibility and Parental Control
SafetyMode Plus Flexibility and Parental Control
"A phone that can grow with your child and adapt to their changing needs." - Mumsnet
The "Other Phone" runs SafetyMode Plus by default, instead of Nothing's proprietary Nothing OS.
SafetyMode Plus is designed to mimic the minimalist approach of older non-smartphones, aiming to prevent digital addiction and encourage balanced use.
However, it is very important to note that parents have full flexibility to disable SafetyMode at any time, transforming the "Other Phone" into a device running the full Nothing OS.
Mumsnet notes that "this is a phone that can grow with your child and adapt to their changing needs."
The same caveats apply to the app control feature mentioned earlier, which allows parents to set strict schedules and time limits for specific applications, or completely restrict their internet access, or block access entirely.
This control can also be fully lifted when the time is right and the child becomes more mature.
In other words, the "Other Phone" is essentially a CMF Phone 2 Pro with a removable digital protection layer, making it a more attractive and practical option for teenagers compared to phones with fixed and inflexible restrictions.
Digital Safety Challenges and Parental & Teen Concerns
Digital Safety Challenges (Statistics)
Both parents and teenagers today recognize the increasing risks associated with excessive smartphone use and its negative impacts.
Research conducted by HMD earlier in 2024 showed that more than half of surveyed teenagers (12,000 teens) expressed deep concern about their phone addiction, and 52% stated they had been harassed or bullied by strangers online.
Additionally, 53% reported seeing content they wished they hadn't – which was mostly sexual or violent content – and 56% said they had witnessed direct bullying incidents.
At the same time, a 2024 study by Mumsnet found that 77% of 510 parents surveyed said that keeping their children safe online has become a nearly impossible task.
The "Other Phone", similar to the HMD Fuse, aims to reduce these alarming figures and mitigate digital risks.
However, convincing children to switch from flagship iPhone and Samsung phones remains a significant challenge, and is easier said than done.
